422 Witnesses to Testify Against Mackenzie in Shakahola Cult Case

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has revealed its plan to present a staggering 422 witnesses in court to testify against Paul Mackenzie, the prime suspect in the Shakahola massacre case.

Mackenzie and 94 others face charges of manslaughter for their alleged involvement in the deaths that occurred at Shakahola forest in Kilifi County.

During Tuesday’s proceedings, prosecution counsels informed the court of their intention to provide electronic and documentary evidence to substantiate the case beyond reasonable doubt.

 The ODPP stated, “Chief Magistrate Hon. Alex Ithuku heard that, in addition to the testimony of those witnesses, the DPP will table electronic and documentary evidence to prove the 238 counts of manslaughter against the 40 women and 55 men linked to 429 deaths in the Shakahola massacre.”

Following confirmation of receipt of the prosecution’s witness statements and exhibits by the defence team, the court scheduled the trial to commence on August 12-15, and continue on September 9-12, 2024.

Emphasizing the importance of an uninterrupted trial, the ODPP highlighted that proceedings will be conducted on a day-to-day basis to ensure justice for all parties involved, including Mackenzie and his co-accused, who have been denied bond.

Previously, a Mombasa court ordered Shakahola key suspect Paul Mackenzie and 94 others taken to hospital immediately after staging a fresh hunger strike.

Chief Magistrate Alex Ithuku directed Mackenzie, his wife Rhoda Maweu and others charged with 238 counts of manslaughter, escorted to hospital for an immediate doctors’ examination.

The magistrate visited the accused in the court basement and later stated that he observed some can barely stand or open their eyes hence called for them to be treated immediately.

Hon. Ithuku’s directive followed an application by the prosecution seeking to have the accused persons examined by a medical practitioner on their nutrition and health condition.

The prosecution indicated that there was need for urgent intervention measures to rescue the accused persons, who are on hunger strike for several days.
