Cheruiyot Kirui: Family of Kenyan Mountaineer Who Died on Mt Everest Say Body Will Remain on Mountain

  • The family of Joshua Cheruiyot Kirui, the Kenyan mountaineer who tragically died on Mt. Everest, has decided to leave his body on the mountain
  • This is due to the significant risks involved in retrieving it
  • Cheruiyot fell into a crevasse near the summit, and the family believes he is now at rest in his beloved mountains

Following the tragic death of Joshua Cheruiyot Kirui on Mt. Everest on May 22, 2024, his family has made the heart-wrenching decision to let his body remain on the mountain.

This conclusion was reached after thorough consultations and careful consideration of all circumstances surrounding the incident.

Cheruiyot fell into a crevasse just 48 meters from the summit, at an altitude of 8,848 meters.

Retrieving his body from such a high and perilous location would pose significant risks to any rescue team.

The family emphasized that they do not wish to endanger any lives in the process.

Cheruiyot had a profound love for the mountains, and they loved him in return.

His family finds solace in the fact that he rests in his happy place, where his passion for mountaineering reached its peak.

The Kirui family expressed their deep appreciation for the outpouring of love and condolence messages from relatives, friends, and the outdoor community.

They specifically acknowledged the immense support received from the KCB Group family, where Joshua worked. They noted that the overwhelming response affirmed how much their son was cherished.

The family extended their gratitude to Seven Summit Treks for their support, information, and guidance during this difficult time.

They also expressed their prayers and sympathies to the family of Nawang Sherpa, Cheruiyot’s Sherpa during the expedition, who remains missing. They hope the Sherpa’s family finds peace amidst their search.

A press release seen by this writer said memorial services will be held in Nairobi and Chepterit village to honor Cheruiyot’s life and legacy.

Details of these services will be communicated in due course. The family asks for continued prayers and support as they navigate this challenging period.
