  • Rex Kanyike’s father Chris Odawa shared the anguish he now lives with after a rogue cop wantonly shot at his son
  • He accused the government of shielding the officer responsible and expressed his ongoing pain and desire for justice
  • Chris wielded video evidence of the cop shooting yet another protester, saying the country was broken if the cop is still scot free
  • Rex was laid to rest in Kamuthanga village, Machakos County, on July 5, in a somber ceremony that was attended by activists and political leaders

Chris Odawa, the father of Rex Kanyike, a 24-year-old who was tragically shot by a police officer during the initial anti-finance bill protests, has shared the sorrow he endures seeing the officer remain free.

In an interview, Odawa expressed his belief that someone powerful in the government is protecting the officer, as he remains unapprehended despite shooting another individual.

Odawa spoke bitterly about his son’s unjust death, revealing the pain he lives with daily.

He shared social media posts identifying the officer and his family, expressing his frustration at the officer’s continued freedom and his own desire for revenge.

Odawa has video evidence of the day the officer fired at his son, who was pronounced dead shortly after being rushed to a hospital in Nairobi’s CBD.

He also mentioned another video showing the same officer shooting at journalists with live bullets, deepening his grief over his son’s death at the hands of a rogue cop.

Odawa believes the officer will likely appear at future protests, as the government has refrained from holding him accountable.

Rex Laid to Rest

Rex was laid to rest on Friday, July 5, at his parents’ home in Kamuthanga village, Machakos County, with his family calling for justice.

During the burial, Odawa eulogized his son as a humble boy with great potential, lamenting the loss of his firstborn for no reason.

“It is so painful to lose my firstborn child for no reason. On that fateful day, it was just a phone call away and Rex was no more,” Odawa said amid emotional responses from mourners.

Rex’s mother, Gillian Odawa, accused the police of causing her son’s premature death.

She addressed the officer who fired the fatal bullet, stating, “To the policeman who fired a bullet in my son’s body, I think you are happy now, but remember God cannot be bribed. You will pay with your own blood. May your fourth generation never know peace.”

She continued, “With your family and the boss who sent you…may you watch your children die the way you watched mine die. You prevented the ones who tried to help my son to hospital and teargassed them as well.”

Gillian Odawa emphasized the irreplaceable gap left by her son’s death, questioning the police’s duty to serve: “Is it utumishi kwa wote (service to all) or uuwaji kwa wote (killing of all)?”
