  • Kenyans are voicing their dismay after SGR’s announcement of luxury coach prices reaching up to Ksh 20,000, with many pointing out that Jambo Jet offers cheaper flights
  • Despite the SGR’s new premium coaches featuring reclining seats, enhanced luggage solutions, and spacious interiors, netizens said air travel to Mombasa is more cost-effective and quicker
  • One netizen reacted saying: “12k for a one way ticket? I’ll fly and save both time and money!”

The recent unveiling of luxury coaches on the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) has sparked a wave of disbelief and disapproval among Kenyans.

With the new premium tickets priced at Ksh 12,000 for a one-way journey and up to Ksh 20,000 for a return trip, many are questioning the value of spending six hours on a train when a flight to Mombasa costs less and takes only 45 minutes.

The SGR, which has introduced 20 new coaches, including four premium ones, was expected to enhance rail travel.

However, the high ticket prices have left many netizens comparing it unfavorably with air travel.

Here’s how Kenyans have reacted:

@unnipraise tweeted, “5hrs…12k. 45min….8k….Welcome to Kenya 🇰🇪,” highlighting the stark contrast between the train’s duration and the cost of flying.

@xvan.hickens expressed frustration with, “Ati 12k na ni kwa reli…si hiyo upande Tu ndege,” questioning why anyone would choose the train when a flight is cheaper.

@johnmorris____ humorously noted, “Back pains for 7 hours na kuna Jambojet 10k for 55 mins bana🤣🤣,” referring to the discomfort of a long train ride versus a shorter, more affordable flight.

@queen_sugaarr added, “12k😂😂😂wacha nipande ndege 1hour nimefika,” suggesting that a flight is a more practical option for those looking to save time and money.

Despite the introduction of these high-end coaches, which feature fully reclining seats, enhanced luggage solutions, and spacious interiors, the reaction from the public indicates a strong preference for air travel.

The new SGR pricing has prompted many to reconsider their travel options, with some even questioning the value of the premium experience.

Even as the government continues to promote the new SGR features and future plans, including expanded railway stations and Wifi services, it remains to be seen whether these additions will address the concerns of cost-conscious travelers.
