  • Eighteen people tragically died this morning when a plane crashed shortly after taking off from Kathmandu in Nepal
  • The Saurya Airlines flight, bound for Pokhara, went down in the eastern section of Tribhuvan International Airport, leaving the pilot as the sole survivor
  • This incident adds to the airport’s troubled history, including the 2019 crash of a Bangladeshi airliner that killed 51 people

A tragic plane crash occurred on Wednesday shortly after takeoff from Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, resulting in the deaths of 18 people. The sole survivor, the pilot, sustained injuries but is not in critical condition.

Authorities have confirmed that all 18 bodies have been recovered from the crash site.

The injured pilot, suffering from eye injuries, is currently being treated at Kathmandu Medical College Hospital. Due to confidentiality, the attending doctor has not disclosed further details.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal reported that the Saurya Airlines domestic flight, en route to Pokhara, took off at 11:11 a.m. local time.

Shortly after takeoff, the plane crashed in the eastern section of the airport. Despite it being monsoon season, no rain was reported at the time, though visibility remained low.

The crash site, Tribhuvan International Airport, is known for its challenging conditions, situated in a valley surrounded by mountains.

This difficult terrain adds to the complexity of takeoffs and landings for pilots. Emergency crews and investigators have since closed the airport to begin their work.

The flight manifest listed two pilots and 17 passengers, including 16 Nepali nationals and one Yemeni national. The victims’ bodies have been transported to T.U. Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu for autopsies.

Saurya Airlines operates the Bombardier CRJ 200 for its domestic routes. This incident adds to the airport’s troubled history, including the 2019 crash of a Bangladeshi airliner that killed 51 people and a 2015 incident where a Turkish Airlines jet skidded off the runway.
