  • Hussein Mohamed has issued an apology after a misleading tweet claiming a youth was earning KSh 150,000 sparked widespread outrage
  • The State House spokesperson clarified he meant USD 150 instead of KSh 150,000, but many criticized him for the discrepancy and questioned the government’s job creation claims
  • Despite his explanation, critics argue that USD 150 [KSh 17K] is nothing to wax lyrical and called for more substantial job opportunities within Kenya.

State House spokesperson Hussein Mohamed has issued an apology after his tweet, which inaccurately claimed a young graduate was earning KSh 150,000, led to a storm of criticism on Twitter.

Mohamed’s post, which included a video of the graduate speaking to President William Ruto, falsely suggested the youth earned far more than the actual KSh 40 per week he reported.

This discrepancy sparked a wave of backlash, with many accusing Mohamed of deceit and questioning the government’s claims about job creation.

In his apology, Mohamed clarified that he had mistakenly stated KSh 150,000 instead of the correct amount, USD 150. He urged Kenyans not to overreact, emphasizing that the confusion was merely a currency mix-up.

Despite his explanation, many continued to criticize him, arguing that USD 150 (about KSh 17,000) is insufficient and calling for more substantial job creation efforts within Kenya rather than promoting online opportunities.

Here are some of the critical tweets directed at the spokesperson:

Godwin Murithi (@Godwin_Murithi): “Kenya Kwanza thinks Digital/Online Jobs are the greatest invention since the discovery of fire 50,000 years ago. Don’t I have news for them.”

Marara® (@marara_one): “Stop with the PR nonsense about online jobs. We can’t all sit around doing gigs for other countries while our own capabilities go to waste. Get real and do something that actually benefits Kenyans!”

Nyabasa Danvas (@NyabasaDanvas): “You’ve been caught lying. You’re the reason why fools like Sudi are glorified because reputable journalists have turned into parrots spewing hatred.”

Makena Mwita (@MakenaMwita_): “$40 x 4 = $160. If you have to lie, please put some effort into it.”

Brima🏹 (@BrimaWontMiss): “That’s like KSh 17,000, the same amount you pay teachers, and you’re boasting about it? Ridiculous.”
