A death that has shaken the corridors of Kenya’s medical community is now under intense investigation, as police seek answers in the tragic demise of Dr. Desree Moraa Obwogi, a 27-year-old medical intern found dead under deeply disturbing circumstances.
Dr. Moraa, who had only been at Gatundu Level 5 Hospital for four weeks, was discovered hanging from a balcony just metres away from the hospital on Sunday, September 22, 2024.
Her death wasn’t just another statistic. It was a tragedy that was silently foretold.
After enduring a grueling 36-hour shift, Dr. Moraa walked out of the hospital for the last time, unnoticed and exhausted. No one knew the torment she carried.

She never returned. Hours later, her body was found dangling from the balcony of her shared home, with a chilling suicide note left behind.
“I can’t do this anymore,” the note read, in part. “This job has taken everything from me.”
The message has left her colleagues and authorities grappling with the painful question: What went so wrong for someone who had dedicated her life to saving others?
A Silent Cry for Help
According to Citizen TV, the note exposed a silent but growing crisis among young doctors.
Dr. Moraa hinted at unbearable working conditions that left her feeling trapped, with no way out.

“She never showed any signs of this,” one of her friends shared in shock, declining to be named. “She was strong, or at least that’s what she wanted everyone to believe.”
An Overworked and Overburdened System
Her death has sent shockwaves through the healthcare sector, as the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) now demands immediate action.
Union officials in Kiambu County lament the deteriorating mental health of medical interns, with frustrations, long hours, and unsafe working conditions creating a recipe for disaster.
“This system is designed to break you,” Maina Githinji, Chairman of KMPDU Central Kenya, said during a press briefing.
“Dr. Moraa isn’t the first life we’ve lost to it, and if nothing changes, she won’t be the last.”
In a hard-hitting statement, KMPDU Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah condemned the healthcare system’s failure to protect its own, saying, “We have long warned that if doctors’ well-being continues to be neglected, these kinds of tragedies will become all too common.
