  • 20-year-old athlete Joseph Hussein Njagi collapsed and died after completing a 3,000-meter race at Kipchoge Stadium in Uasin Gishu County on September 27
  • Despite immediate medical attention, Njagi was pronounced dead upon arrival at Uasin Gishu District Hospital
  • This heartbreaking loss comes just weeks after another athlete was lit up on fire by her boyfriend in the neighboring county

20-year-old Joseph Hussein Njagi’s budding athletic career came to a sudden and tragic end as he collapsed at the finish line of a 3,000-meter race at Kipchoge Stadium in Uasin Gishu County.

The young athlete, competing in a scholarship trial, had just completed the grueling race when he fell to the ground in distress on Friday, September 27, shocking spectators and officials alike.

Njagi, a promising runner, had his sights set on securing a scholarship that would potentially propel him to greater heights in his career.

As he crossed the finish line just past midday, his body gave way, and despite immediate medical intervention, Njagi’s life could not be saved.

Eldoret Police Station officers were alerted shortly after the incident, and Njagi’s body was transported to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital for a post-mortem to determine the exact cause of death.

Initial reports suggest that the young athlete may have suffered from an undiagnosed health issue, a tragic fate that has struck a devastating chord within Kenya’s close-knit athletics community.

Njagi’s death comes just weeks after the sudden passing of another Kenyan athlete, Willy Chelewa, who collapsed after securing an international sponsorship.

These back-to-back tragedies have left many questioning the pressures and health risks young athletes face in their pursuit of excellence.

Njagi’s passing has reignited urgent discussions about the importance of athlete health, particularly for those competing in high-stakes trials.

While Kipchoge Stadium has been a breeding ground for some of Kenya’s greatest runners, it’s now a site of sorrow, as Njagi’s dreams were cut short far too soon.

The Kenya Athletics Federation has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident, but the grief felt across the athletic world is palpable.
