The impeachment trial against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua hit an unexpected pause Thursday afternoon after he failed to appear in court for his testimony.
The DP, who was scheduled to take the stand, was reportedly taken ill, according to his legal team led by Senior Counsel Paul Muite.
Muite addressed the Senate, requesting a delay in proceedings after informing the House of Gachagua’s condition.
“The sad reality is that the DP has been taken ill and is currently in hospital,” Muite said. He appealed to Senate Speaker Amason Kingi to allow the legal team until 5 p.m. to assess Gachagua’s health and report back.
The Senate, facing the time-bound nature of the trial, suspended the session until the late afternoon.

Speaker Kingi emphasized the strict timeline, noting that the trial would have to conclude by the day’s end.

“We will suspend this sitting and resume at 5 p.m. We expect the Deputy President to take the stand then. This is a time-bound process, unfortunately,” Kingi stated.
Gachagua, who is battling 11 charges including gross violation of the constitution, corruption, and bullying, could face removal from office if at least 45 of the 67 senators vote in favor of his ousting.
