Huruma: Prisoner Who Pleaded Guilty to Alcohol Charges Dies After Being Slapped with KSh 20K Fine

  • A convict who pleaded guilty to alcohol possession charges died shortly after being fined Ksh 20,000 by Makadara Law Courts
  • Tom Odiada, unable to pay the fine, was rejected by prison officials due to his weak health and returned to Huruma police station, where he collapsed the following day
  • Despite efforts to rush him to the hospital, Odiada was pronounced dead on arrival, prompting an investigation by the IPOA

A convict who was slapped with a Ksh 20,000 fine for alcohol-related charges collapsed and died shortly after being rejected by prison authorities.

 Tom Odiada, who had pleaded guilty to possessing alcohol, was sentenced by Makadara Law Courts and given the choice of paying the fine or serving three months in jail.

However, after being escorted to Industrial Area Prisons on October 4, Odiada was deemed “too weak and sickly” to be admitted and was returned to Huruma police station.

Tragically, the following day, Odiada collapsed in police custody, and despite being rushed to the hospital, he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The incident has raised serious concerns about the conditions in police custody, with authorities confirming that the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has been notified for further investigation.

19-Year-Old Dies Moments Before Mathematics Exam in Mumias

Elsewhere, a 19-year-old KCSE candidate from Ebubere Secondary School in Mumias has tragically collapsed and died just before sitting for his mathematics paper, leaving his family and classmates in shock.

 Calistus Wamboye had left home earlier in high spirits, showing no signs of illness, making his sudden death all the more baffling.

 His grieving family has called for a full investigation, and questions linger about the cause of this devastating tragedy that has cast a dark cloud over the national exams.
