  • Police in Napak District, Northern Uganda, were shocked to uncover over 10 acres of marijuana ready for harvest in a raid on Alikilek village on November 11
  • Despite the growers fleeing the scene, authorities swiftly removed tons of the illegal crop, planning to burn it publicly to send a strong message about their commitment to eradicating drugs
  • Police believe the marijuana operation is linked to a larger cartel network and are now working with the UPDF to dismantle other illegal plantations in the region

Police in Northern Uganda were left stunned after uncovering a massive illegal marijuana operation in Napak District, where they discovered over 10 acres of the drug ready for harvest.

The operation was exposed on Monday, November 11, when officers acted on reliable intelligence and raided a marijuana plantation in Alikilek village.

The police team, led by Napak District Police Commander Wilfred Waigo, found the expansive fields of marijuana, but the growers had abandoned the area by the time authorities arrived, hinting at the scale of the illegal operation and its swift departure.

“We are determined to send a clear message that we are serious about eradicating drugs from our communities,” said Mike Longole, Karamoja Police spokesperson, who added that the plants would be publicly burned in front of local leaders to emphasize the state’s commitment to combating drug trafficking.

Police believe that other nearby villages may also be involved in cultivating marijuana for distribution by cartels, and they are now coordinating with the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) to launch a larger campaign to dismantle the entire drug network in the region.

The discovery of such a large-scale marijuana operation has raised alarms about the growing presence of drug cartels in Uganda, with authorities vowing to intensify their efforts to combat illegal cultivation and distribution in the Karamoja region.
