  • A speeding miraa vehicle plowed into two young children, aged 7 and 12, killing them instantly on the Mwea-Embu highway late Tuesday night
  • The shocking hit-and-run left the community in disbelief, with locals enraged by the growing number of reckless accidents caused by miraa drivers who seem to flout all road rules
  • Police have launched a frantic manhunt of the reckless driver, as he reportedly fled the scene after the accident

A speeding miraa vehicle slammed into two children, ages 7 and 12, on the Mwea-Embu highway, leaving them dead within moments.

The driver, who was recklessly overtaking another vehicle, fled the scene immediately, sparking a desperate manhunt by authorities.

According to Mwea-East Sub-County Police Commander, Mohammed Jarso, the vehicle was speeding towards Nairobi when it struck the two children, who were near the roadside in Ngurubani.

The impact was devastating. One child, a 12-year-old boy, died on the spot, while the younger 7-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries at Mwea Mission Hospital.

“Miraa drivers act as though they’re above the law,” said David Mwangi, a lifelong resident of Ngurubani, reflecting the growing frustration over frequent accidents caused by miraa vehicles.

Peter Murunguru, another resident, revealed that both victims were from Kithogondo slum in Ngurubani town, and were students at Ngurubani and Thiba primary schools.

Their untimely deaths have sparked intense calls for stricter enforcement of road safety measures.

The police have issued a stern warning to miraa vehicle drivers, urging them to obey speed limits and traffic regulations in a bid to prevent further loss of life on this notorious stretch of road.

“This needs to stop. Drivers must take responsibility,” warned Jarso.
