  • Kirinyaga church elder Simon Waweru, who was hospitalized after being attacked by a swarm of bees during a funeral in Huduma, Mwea, has finally been discharged after seven days
  • Speaking about the ordeal, the 60-year-old recalled waking up hours later in a hospital bed, confused and surrounded by his worried family
  • Despite the chaos caused by the bee attack, the burial ceremony proceeded later that evening, with mourners using lit tires to keep the swarm at bay

A dramatic funeral in Huduma, Mwea, took a surreal turn on December 10 when mourners, including clergy members, were ambushed by a swarm of bees.

Among the victims was 60-year-old church elder Simon Waweru of ACK St. Luke Wang’uru Church, who spent seven harrowing days in the hospital following the incident.

Speaking after his discharge from Mwea Mission Hospital Karira on Wednesday, Waweru recounted the terrifying ordeal.

“I was unconscious as I was being rushed to the hospital,” he revealed. “It took me five hours to realize where I was. At first, I saw my daughter crying and wondered where I was.”

Waweru admitted that he had underestimated the danger posed by bees. “I never imagined bees could be this hostile and dangerous,” he said, reflecting on the unexpected attack that disrupted the burial of retired teacher Faith Murigu.

The chaos unfolded just as the mourners were transitioning from a church service to the burial site.

“We had just come from a service at our church, and as we were about to begin the burial, the bees attacked us, forcing everyone to scatter for safety,” Waweru narrated.

While many mourners, including clergy, sustained minor injuries and were discharged the same day, Waweru bore the brunt of the attack, requiring extended medical care.
