Community Thrown into Mourning as Lightning Kills 8 Secondary School Students, Injures 82

Tragedy struck Businda Secondary School in Bukombe District, Tanzania, on Tuesday evening, January 28, 2025, when a devastating lightning strike killed eight students and left 82 others seriously injured.

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu confirmed the heartbreaking incident in a statement on X, expressing her deep condolences to the affected families and the entire nation.

“I have received with great sadness the news of a lightning accident that caused the deaths of seven students and injured 82 others at Businda Secondary School, Bukombe District, Geita Region. I extend my condolences to the Member of Parliament for Bukombe Constituency and Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Doto Mashaka Biteko, as well as to the families and friends of those affected. May God have mercy on all who lost their lives in this tragedy and grant the injured a speedy recovery,” President Suluhu stated.

The fatal incident occurred as Tanzania was hosting the Africa Heads of States Mission 300 Africa Energy Summit in Dar es Salaam.

The summit brought together key African leaders, including Kenyan President William Ruto, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, African Development Bank President Akinwumi Adesina, and World Bank President Ajay Banga.

Kenyan opposition leader and African Union Commission chairperson candidate Raila Odinga was also among the invited dignitaries.
