  • On the morning of January 31, 2025, a patient seeking dialysis at Mombasa’s Pandya Hospital was allegedly subjected to a horrifying ordeal when her own doctor, Dias Jumba Wabwire, reportedly raped her at 5 AM
  • Arraigned before the Mombasa High Court, Wabwire denied the charges but walked free on a Ksh.500,000 bond, a decision that has sparked outrage among women’s rights groups
  • FIDA has strongly condemned the incident, revealing that the victim had allegedly been assaulted by the same doctor before and demanding action against hospital staff accused of covering up the crime

A Mombasa-based doctor accused of raping a patient at Pandya Hospital has been freed on a Ksh.500,000 bond after pleading not guilty to the charges.

Dias Jumba Wabwire, who was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Alex Ithuku at the Mombasa High Court on Monday, was charged with one count of rape.

According to the prosecution, the alleged assault took place at 5 a.m. on January 31, 2025, when the victim, who was seeking dialysis services at the facility, was reportedly attacked.

His release has sparked outrage, with women’s rights organization FIDA strongly condemning the incident and demanding swift action.

FIDA has alleged that this was not the first time the victim had been assaulted by the suspect, calling for further arrests of individuals they claim actively obstructed justice.

“The DCI and ODPP must investigate and charge specific staff members who were aware of the incident yet took no action. FIDA will closely monitor this case to ensure the survivor receives justice,” said Jane Onyango, a lawyer with the organization.
