TikTok unveiled its 2025 Global Discover List, and among them were six African creators “to watch”. Top on the List is Kenya’s Roy Kanyi, a tech enthusiast who made the Educator’s List.

“These creators educate their community and entertain along the way. Whether they’re teaching languages, exploring new technology, or highlighting ancient history, educators encourage people to discover something new and to learn more about the world,” said Ms Boniswa Sidwaba, the Head of TikTok’s Content Operations in Sub Saharan Africa.

“We carefully consider all content creators on our platform, selecting finalists based on their impact both on TikTok and in the real world. These creators have sparked trends, started meaningful conversations, showcased creativity, and fostered safe spaces for their communities,” added Ms Sidwaba.

Roy Kanyi is a tech enthusiast who simplifies the complex world of gadgets and electronics. He creates content that is deemed engaging, relatable and helps users make informed decisions about smartphones, televisions and tech accessories.

““TikTok has been a complete game-changer for me! Honestly, I never expected it to have such a profound
impact on my life. It’s helped me develop valuable skills like storytelling, video editing, and on-camera communication – skills that actually landed me a journalism job at Kenya’s most trusted news network! Beyond that, TikTok has given me a deep understanding of the creator economy. Now I consult with brands, helping them navigate the platform and connect with creators. It’s not just about the skills and the career though; it’s also about the community and the connections I’ve made. TikTok has empowered me to build a career and a life doing what I love, and I’m excited to see where this journey takes me next,” said Mr Kanyi in his acceptance speech.

There are 10 Educators who were listed in the Discover List, and Roy was the only African on it.

Now in its third consecutive year, the annual list celebrates 50 standout creators across five categories: Icons, Innovators, Foodies, Educators, and Originators. This year, six Sub-Saharan Africa creators were recognized on TikTok’s Global Discover List, highlighting the region’s growing influence on digital culture.

“The 2025 Discover List underscores the power of TikTok in breaking down barriers, fostering creativity, and connecting communities across the world. Creators selected were nominated by our global team, which evaluated creators who have been making a significant impact on and off the app over the past six months,” concluded the statement from TikTok.
