Activities at the Laikipia County Assembly halted on Tuesday when Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) resorted to physical altercations. Two conflicting factions clashed over the proposition to remove Minority Leader Sammy Lekopien Parletto from his position.

The uproar began when some Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) began protesting as Speaker Lantano Nabaala commenced reading a motion for impeachment, aiming to remove Lekopien Parletto from their position.

Throughout the session, the MCAs were observed pushing and throwing items at each other. At a certain moment, Speaker Nabaala and his deputy Anthony Theuri were involved in a physical altercation.

The MCAs backing the Minority Leader contended that the notification was presented without prior communication, catching the majority of them off guard.

After the Speaker announced the notice, the deputy speaker engaged in a confrontation with his superior, while the members of the county assembly pounded their desks and some other legislators exited the chamber.

“You want to silence the house. It will not be possible because this house is governed by the rule of law,” Parleto told the press after storming out of the house.

Some expressed their disappointment openly, while they criticized the way the removal had been executed.

“The way events have transpired here today has been a shock to us, that we have a County Assembly that does not follow law and order,” one of the MCAs, Gitahi Macharia told journalists.

The MCAs backing the Minority Leader contended that the notification was presented without prior communication, catching the majority of them off guard.

In the interim, law enforcement had to step in when politicians overwhelmed the assembly guards.

After the disagreements, the county assembly shut down, and scheduled events were postponed indefinitely.

In another area of Kisii, a total of 51 out of 69 Members of County Assembly (MCAs) have endorsed a motion for impeachment aimed at removing Deputy Governor Robert Monda from office.

When submitting the motion on February 20th, the MCAs alleged that the Deputy Governor had engaged in serious misconduct and misused their authority.
