In a stark admission of systemic failures within the State Department for Immigration and Citizen Services, the Kenyan government has pledged urgent action to rectify the ongoing passport issuance crisis.

The Ministry of Interior and National Administration, led by Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, issued a press release today addressing the long-standing challenges that have plagued the passport production infrastructure.

The press release highlighted years of neglect in investment in passport production infrastructure, accumulation of supplier debts, and rampant corruption as key factors undermining the government’s efforts to transform the immigration and citizen services department.

Consequently, many Kenyans have faced significant hurdles in obtaining passports, hindering their ability to travel for employment, medical care, education, business, or leisure purposes.

Cabinet Secretary Kindiki took responsibility for the sluggish pace of reforms and systemic inefficiencies, acknowledging the unjustifiable situation that denies Kenyans their right to acquire citizenship documents, including travel documents.

To address the crisis, the government has pledged to secure the necessary funds and settle outstanding supplier debts.

Furthermore, a crackdown has been initiated to identify and remove corrupt officials responsible for exacerbating the situation. Those found culpable will face dismissal from service, prosecution, and surcharges.

In a plea for patience from the Kenyan populace, Cabinet Secretary Kindiki emphasized the government’s dedication to conclusively resolving the passport issuance crisis.

The Ministry of Interior and National Administration aims to restore efficiency and timely service delivery in the shortest possible time.

The press release signifies a pivotal moment in the government’s approach to addressing bureaucratic challenges that have long plagued passport issuance in Kenya.

As citizens await tangible improvements, there is renewed hope for a more transparent and efficient system that upholds the rights of all Kenyans to acquire essential citizenship documents.
