  • A woman was shocked to discover that her supposed big win was actually due to a malfunction in the machine
  • The machine displayed a jackpot of $42,949,672, which would have been the largest in US history
  • Unfortunately, the company informed her that the machine had malfunctioned and offered her a steak meal instead

In a heartbreaking twist of fate, a woman who thought she had won £33 million from a casino machine ended up being offered a steak dinner instead of the hefty prize money displayed on the machine.

Katrina Bookman found herself in disbelief at Resorts World Casino in Queens, New York, when the slot machine she was playing flashed a staggering $42,949,672 (KES 309,225,008,608)—potentially the largest slot jackpot in US history.

Capturing the moment with a selfie beside the screen, Bookman was convinced she had hit the jackpot.

However, her elation quickly turned to disappointment when she returned the following day, only to be told she hadn’t won anything substantial.

The casino’s official stance was that the machine had malfunctioned, with Bookman’s actual winnings amounting to a mere $2.25 (KES 311).

Citing a disclaimer stating that “malfunctions void all pays and plays,” the casino refused to honor the massive jackpot. Despite feeling sympathy for Bookman’s misfortune, the casino offered her a consolation prize—a steak dinner—to accompany her meager winnings.

Resorts World spokesperson Dan Bank clarified the situation, asserting that the displayed figure was clearly the result of a malfunction, a determination later corroborated by the New York State Gaming Commission.

Although the casino offered to pay Bookman the correct amount displayed on the printed ticket, she was understandably upset by the incident and subsequently filed a lawsuit against the casino for negligence in maintaining their lottery equipment.

Bookman’s lawyer, Alan Ripka, criticized the casino’s explanations as “ridiculous,” questioning whether the machine had been properly inspected and maintained.

He raised concerns about the fairness of the gaming environment for other patrons.

Eventually, the case was resolved out of court, but it left lingering questions about the integrity of the casino’s operations.
