Kenyan long-distance running legend Eliud Kipchoge has made a surprising announcement, revealing that he will not be defending his marathon title at the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

This decision comes following his unexpected 10th-place finish at the 2024 Tokyo Marathon, where he clocked a time of 2:06:50, significantly off his usual pace.

In a heartfelt statement released to the press, Kipchoge expressed his disappointment but also his eagerness to explore new opportunities and challenges in his career.

The 39-year-old athlete, who clinched gold at both the 2016 Rio and 2020 (2021) Tokyo Olympic Marathons, had been aiming for an unprecedented third consecutive Olympic title.

Kipchoge’s dominance in the marathon world is unparalleled, with an impressive record of 11 victories in major events, including five wins at the prestigious Berlin Marathon.

Notably, he twice broke the world record at the Berlin Marathon, with his fastest time standing at 2:01:09 in 2023, a record that has since been surpassed by Kelvin Kiptum.

The Kenyan superstar’s achievements extend beyond the marathon distance.

He famously attempted to break the elusive two-hour barrier in the marathon through two experimental events: Breaking2 in 2017 and the INEOS 1:59 Challenge in 2019.

Although these runs didn’t count as official marathons, they showcased Kipchoge’s extraordinary talent and determination, with his best effort of 1:59:40 in Vienna.

With his absence, athletes like Benson Kipruto, Alexander Mutiso Munyao, and Vincent Kipkemoi Ngetich from Kenya, along with Ethiopian Tamirat Tola, will vie for the top spot on the podium.

While Kipchoge’s future plans remain uncertain, his legacy as one of the greatest marathon runners of all time is secure.

Represented by NN Running and Global Sports Communications, he leaves behind a remarkable career marked by unparalleled achievements and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
