As the Rotterdam Marathon commenced on Sunday, April 14, emotions ran high as Asenath Rotich, widow of world marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum, was visibly moved by the heartfelt tribute paid to her late husband.

Kelvin Kiptum, a revered figure in the world of distance running, tragically passed away earlier this year, leaving behind a legacy that touched many.

As the marathon’s organizers honored him with a minute’s silence, Asenath Rotich was overwhelmed with emotion, highlighting the profound impact Kiptum had on the running community.

Accompanying Asenath Rotich was Bob Verbeeck, CEO and Founder of Golazo sports management company, who offered his support and solace during the poignant moment.

Golazo had been instrumental in managing Kiptum’s career, and Verbeeck’s presence symbolized the enduring bond between Kiptum and the organization.

The Rotterdam Marathon, which attracted a staggering 50,000 runners, had garnered immense interest following Kiptum’s ambitious announcement to attempt a sub-two-hour finish.

Despite Kiptum’s untimely demise, the race continued with a sense of reverence and determination to honor his memory.

Abdi Nageeye of the Netherlands emerged victorious in the men’s race, setting a Dutch national record time of two hours, four minutes, and 45 seconds.

Reflecting on Kiptum’s legacy, Dr. Chris Kiptoo, Kenya’s National Treasury Principal Secretary, expressed his admiration for the late athlete’s determination and spirit.
