  • President William Ruto has instructed the Ministry of Education to postpone the reopening of all schools nationwide until further notice
  • This decision is prompted by concerning predictions from the meteorological department warning of increased flooding risks due to ongoing rainfall
  • Issued on Friday, the President’s directive effectively delays the anticipated resumption of schools for the second term, originally scheduled for May 6

In a critical decision announced during his national address on Friday, President William Ruto has directed the Ministry of Education to delay the reopening of all schools across the country until further notice.

This directive comes in response to alarming forecasts from the meteorological department indicating a heightened risk of severe flooding amidst the ongoing rains.

The President’s directive, issued on Friday, effectively postpones the planned reopening of schools for the second term, which was initially slated for May 6.

This decision follows closely on the heels of a previous postponement by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, who cited safety concerns due to heavy rains and flooding.

Education CS Machogu, earlier in the week, had underscored the dangers posed by the adverse weather conditions, emphasizing that reopening schools prematurely would jeopardize the safety of both students and staff.

He highlighted the need for comprehensive safety measures to be implemented before resuming classes, especially in schools directly affected by the floods.

Machogu’s circular to education directors at various levels outlined precautionary steps to be taken ahead of the anticipated reopening.

It cknowledged that severely affected schools would remain closed until safety standards could be assured.

In light of these developments, school management bodies have been tasked with assessing damages and devising strategies to mitigate the impact of the inclement weather on educational infrastructure.

They have also have been instructed to submit detailed reports to the relevant authorities by specified deadlines to facilitate comprehensive evaluations and planning.
