  • Two men from Sudan are embroiled in a fierce competition for the affections of 18-year-old Athiak Dau Riak, a member of the Nook clan
  • The magnitude of this marriage negotiation has surpassed customary bounds, sparking widespread discussions
  • One man has reportedly dangled 105 bulls and KSh 3.2 M, while the other 110 bulls and a whooping KSh 5.7M

In Jonglei State’s Twic East and Bor counties of Sudan, a highly competitive marriage negotiation has drawn significant attention, igniting discussions across the Greater Bor region.

At the heart of this contest is 18-year-old Athiak Dau Riak from the Nook clan of Twic East County. The negotiations, which have exceeded traditional norms, involve two prominent suitors offering extraordinary bride prices.

One suitor, Marial Garang Jill of the Koc clan from Bor County, has pledged 105 head of cattle and SSP 65 million (approximately KSh 3.2M).

His rival, Chol Marol Deng from the Awulian clan of Twic East County, has upped the ante with a bid of 110 head of cattle and SSP 110 million (around KSh 5.7M).

These offers far exceed the Dinka Bor customary bride price limit of 30 head of cattle, reaffirmed by the Twic East community in January 2024.

The stakes have sparked widespread debate and interest, highlighting the evolving dynamics of traditional marriage practices.

Sudan’s Radio Tamazuj, reported that cultural expert Kuol Bol Ayom, who himself won a similar competition in 2005 by offering 104 head of cattle, explained that such contests are deeply rooted in Dinka Bor customs.

He emphasized that these practices not only showcase the beauty and virtues of the bride but also the prestige and integrity of the involved families.

Bol stressed the dual importance of love and wealth in these competitions, noting that they promote unity and peaceful coexistence among communities.

He highlighted that such traditions are vital for preserving cultural heritage and fostering societal progress, despite the high stakes often involved.

The family of Athiak Dau Riak has yet to make an official statement regarding the ongoing negotiations, maintaining a deliberate distance from media involvement.

Deng Chol Deng, a cousin to Athiak, confirmed that the family did not release the information circulating online and has chosen to keep the process private.
