Angry Martha Karua Quits Azimio La Umoja After Party Members Accept CS Job Offers from William Ruto

  • Martha Karua has drawn a line in the sand, announcing Narc Kenya’s exit from the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition
  • This move follows President William Ruto’s latest cabinet reshuffle, which left Narc Kenya and Wiper party members out in the cold while welcoming four ODM members
  • Karua, standing firm as a bulwark of opposition, stressed she would play the opposition’s watchdog role rather than blend into a unity government

Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua has officially announced her party’s exit from the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition.

The decision comes hot on the heels of recent political developments where some Azimio members accepted cabinet positions in President William Ruto’s government, sparking Karua’s ire.

In a letter addressed to the coalition’s secretary-general, Junet Mohammed, Narc Kenya’s acting secretary-general Asha Bashir cited the prevailing political climate as untenable for their continued stay in the coalition.

“As NARC Kenya by way of this letter, we are giving notice to exit the Coalition as stipulated in the exit clause(s) in the Coalition Agreement. This notice is effective from the date of this letter,” Bashir wrote.

Karua echoed this sentiment in a tweet, stating, “Our stay in Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Alliance is no longer tenable.”

This declaration came as a surprise, especially after Karua had assured in a recent radio interview that her relationship with coalition leader Raila Odinga was solid and that lines of communication were open.

Refusing to be part of the government of national unity, Karua called for a stronger opposition to hold the Kenya Kwanza government accountable.

She lauded Raila’s readiness to withdraw his candidacy for the African Union Commission, freeing him from potential political manipulation.

The announcement from Narc Kenya arrives amid President Ruto’s latest cabinet nominations, which notably excluded Narc Kenya and Wiper party members.

Ruto’s nominations included four ODM members: John Mbadi, Hassan Joho, Wycliffe Oparanya, and Opiyo Wandayi. Raila, while distancing himself from the selection process, wished the new appointees well.

Meanwhile, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka ruled out any possibility of joining Ruto’s cabinet, dismissing rumors of being considered for the Attorney General position as a “mirage.”

Kalonzo reiterated his stance against joining the government, underscoring a commitment to the Kenyan people, particularly the younger generations.
