Arrested Kenyans Protest Finance Bill with Heated Chants Aboard Police Truck

A group of Kenyans arrested and placed in the back of a police truck continued their heated chants, demanding the rejection of the finance bill, criticized for increasing taxes.

A video shows the detained Kenyans, some seated and others standing, fervently shouting “reject finance bill” despite being guarded by police.

A woman with glasses, red braids, and a water bottle led the chants, while others echoed her calls, also demanding the expulsion of President William Ruto, the architect of the 2024 finance bill.

The arrests occurred in Nairobi’s central business district, where the demonstrators had gathered to protest near Parliament.

The detained individuals are part of a larger group of Kenyans who have converged on the CBD to pressure MPs to reject the bill, which they have labeled as “draconian and oppressive.”

Finance Bill’s Fate Hangs In Balance

The fate of the Finance Bill 2024 in Kenya now hangs in the balance, with the significant public opposition and contentious provisions.

The bill aims to introduce several new taxes and adjustments, such as the minimum top-up tax for multinational firms and the economic presence tax for non-residents operating digital marketplaces​.

Additionally, the bill proposes changes to the VAT system, including applying VAT to certain financial services and removing some VAT exemptions in the tourism and manufacturing sectors​.

The bill has sparked protests, with demonstrators calling for its rejection due to concerns over increased taxes and perceived economic burdens​
