Babu Owino, Ndidi Nyoro named as top performing MPs

  • Mzalendo report reveals silent MPs
  • Absent lawmakers

The 2024 rankings of MPs and Senators showcase a mix of strong performers and those who have remained largely inactive.

Babu Owino (Embakasi East) and Ndindi Nyoro (Kiharu) topped the list, with impressive scores of 72 percent and 71 percent, respectively, based on Infotrak’s Elected Leaders Performance Index.

Other top MPs include Joseph Kalasinga (Kabuchai), Robert Mbui (Kathiani), and Peter Salasya (Mumias East), who also scored highly in the survey.

On the other hand, a report from Mzalendo Trust revealed that 20 MPs were notably silent in the House last year, contributing nothing to debates or discussions.

Among them were Oscar Sudi (Kapseret), Paul Abuor (Rongo), and Irene Kasalu (Kitui).

This raises concerns about the accountability and engagement of these leaders with their constituents and the broader public.

In the Senate, Dan Maanzo (Makueni) and Kamau Murango (Kirinyaga) were recognized as the top performers.

However, some senators, such as Issa Boy (Kwale) and nominated members Betty Bat (ODM) and Shakilla Mohamed (Wiper), were among the least active, with far fewer contributions to the legislative process.

The contrast between the highest and lowest performers highlights varying levels of engagement and impact within Kenya’s Parliament.

What do you think of the findings, especially regarding those who failed to speak up in the House?

The report shows that most of the inactive members are often absent when the Houses are considering or voting on crucial bills and items.

For instance, all three inactive senators were absent when the Senate voted Affordable Housing Bill, IEBC (Amendment) Bill, Primary Health Care Bill and Sugar Bill.

The revelations are an indictment on the lawmakers whose salaries and perks are costing the taxpayers an arm and a leg.
