  • A Baringo teacher left dowry negotiations in chaos after being slapped with a KSh 500,000 fine by his fiancée’s elders, sparking mixed reactions online
  • After paying KSh 40,000 for the event and KSh 60,000 in bride price, he was overwhelmed by additional fines, including one for mistakenly identifying the wrong woman in a line-up
  • Social media users rallied behind him, with many calling the dowry system exploitative and unnecessary in today’s society

Shockwaves hit a dowry negotiation ceremony in Baringo when Kipkirui, a local teacher, unexpectedly walked out after being hit with hefty fines by his fiancée’s elders.

The drama began after Kipkirui had already spent KSh 40,000 to cover the ceremony’s logistics, including food, tents, and a public address system.

Additionally, he had set aside KSh 60,000 as bride price, agreed upon by both families.

However, things took a twist when he was ordered to pay KSh 20,000 more, having impregnated his fiancée before the negotiations.

Further fines quickly piled up – KSh 10,000 for wandering into the wrong homestead on his way to the ceremony, and KSh 5,000 to compensate the elders for waiting after his late arrival.

The tipping point came when Kipkirui was asked to identify his fiancée from a group of twelve women, all dressed in lesos, with their faces concealed.

After mistakenly pointing to the wrong woman, he incurred another KSh 15,000 fine.

The final blow, however, was when the elders demanded an additional KSh 500,000 to cover the cost of his fiancée’s school fees and upbringing.

Infuriated, Kipkirui excused himself, claiming he needed to visit the latrine.

Moments later, he was spotted boarding a matatu to Nairobi, leaving behind his stunned fiancée and her elders.

The news quickly spread, leaving social media users divided. Some rallied behind the teacher, labeling the fines as exploitative.

Others condemned the dowry system altogether, deeming it outdated and unnecessary.

Here are some comments from the story:
