The Ministry of Interior has deployed an elite squad to restore normalcy in Sondu town which is facing inter-communal clashes.

The conflict in the Sondu area which lies between the Kisumu-Kericho border claimed five lives in October with the elite squad conducting 24-hour patrol within the affected areas.

Locals have accused police of laxity and failure to act on intelligence provided.

In a written response to the Senate, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki explained measures put in place to contain the situation and restore normalcy.

“The measures put in place are effective because normalcy has been restored in the area. The schools that were closed have been reopened, businesses resumed and Sondu market is currently operational,” he stated.

Six suspects have been arrested and arraigned in court.

The Interior Ministry assured senators that security operations are being supervised jointly by the Rift Valley and Nyanza regional security teams who have been given firm instructions to ensure immediate resumption of normalcy in the area.

The Interior boss averred that enhanced sharing of intelligence among security agencies has deterred the recurrence of the inter-communal clashes.

Locals have accused police of laxity and failure to act on intelligence provided.

Sondu clashes caught President William Ruto’s attention, prompting the police to swing into action to ensure that normalcy is restored in the troubled region.

Sondu is a small border town between Kisumu and Kericho counties.

The boundary between Kisumu and Kericho counties has been contentious for years with the original boundary posed to have been behind Sondu Police station which was in Kisumu County.

There are claims that the clash began after one person was killed when they were allegedly caught trying to steal cattle from the Kisumu side. However, two people managed to escape.

Last year, the Interior Ministry transferred security chiefs from both sides of the border as the government moved to reclaim calm and return the situation in the area to normal.
