End of an Era as Jimi Wanjigi’s Father Maina Wanjigi Passes Away

Maina Wanjigi, the father of businessman Jimi Wanjigi and a towering figure in Kenya’s political and economic history, passed away at Nairobi Hospital at the age of 92.

Known for his extensive career as a Cabinet minister and his contributions to various sectors, Wanjigi was instrumental in developing the expansive Gikomba Market and establishing the jua kali business sector in Shauri Moyo.

He was a visionary leader who advocated for free primary education in 1973, a goal realized 30 years later, and played a crucial role in settling thousands of landless citizens during his tenure as the Director of Settlement.

Beyond politics, Wanjigi was a philanthropist who initiated numerous community projects, including the Maina Wanjigi Foundation and various educational institutions. His passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy continues to inspire.

Born on October 7, 1931, in Wahudura Village, Murang’a County, Maina Wanjigi’s educational journey took him from Wahudura Primary School to Kagumo Intermediate School, and later to Alliance High School where he served as a medical prefect.

He furthered his studies at Makerere University and earned a master’s degree from Stanford University.

Maina Wanjigi is survived by his wife Mary Wambui Wanjigi, his children Josephine, Jimi, Nancy, and Sani, as well as several grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

The family described him as the cornerstone of their lives and a cherished figure in the community.

As they arrange his funeral, they express deep gratitude for the support and friendship extended to Maina throughout his life.

His passing marks the end of an era for a man whose contributions to Kenya’s political, economic, and social landscapes were profound.

The nation mourns the loss of a true statesman whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
