Fire Ravages Mukuru Kwa Njenga’s Wapewape Zone, Leaving Residents in Despair

A devastating fire broke out at Wapewape zone in Mukuru Kwa Njenga on Sunday afternoon, December 8, engulfing iron sheet houses in a deadly blaze that quickly spread through the area.

Eyewitness videos show the towering flames tearing through the densely packed homes, with desperate residents fleeing from the inferno as they attempt to salvage their belongings.

Community volunteers and fire brigade personnel rushed to the scene, working tirelessly to contain the fire, but by the time of writing, the extent of casualties remained unclear.

This heartbreaking incident comes just weeks after another deadly fire claimed six lives and injured sixteen people in Kamukunji’s Majengo area on November 19.

 The tragic series of fire outbreaks in Nairobi’s informal settlements highlights the persistent danger these communities face, with previous incidents including the loss of three children in a September fire in the neighboring Mukuru Kwa Reuben.

In a city grappling with frequent fire outbreaks, the most recent fire on November 30 at Ngara Market serves as another painful reminder of the risks faced by small-scale traders and residents alike.

 With millions worth of property destroyed, the question remains: will Nairobi’s most vulnerable communities finally see lasting solutions to this recurring tragedy?
