  • Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused the government of deploying a mysterious saloon car, registered as a lorry, to trail his movements
  • The vehicle, which he claims has been parked outside his Nairobi residence and followed him to church and other locations, raises questions about alleged state surveillance
  • Gachagua has likened the situation to oppressive practices from past regimes, calling on the government to respect his privacy as a private citizen

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has alleged targeted harassment by government agents, claiming a suspicious car with a mismatched registration plate has been tailing him across Nairobi and Nyeri.

According to Gachagua, a saloon car parked outside his Nairobi residence recently followed him to various locations, including a Sunday service at PCEA Kerarapon Church.

“The car trailed me from my house, to church, to where I had a late lunch, and back home,” he stated.

What caught his attention was a disturbing detail: a quick search on the NTSA portal revealed that the car’s registration number belongs to a lorry, not a saloon car.

Gachagua described the situation as reminiscent of the oppressive surveillance practices from the Moi era.

“This surveillance and intimidation of Kenyans was last witnessed during the 24 years of Moi’s misrule,” he lamented. “If anything happens to me, let the state bear full responsibility.”

The former deputy president further claimed that unmarked vehicles frequently park near his homes in Nairobi and Nyeri, monitoring visitors and trailing his movements.

He called on the government to respect his privacy, asserting, “You hounded me out of office; allow me to live in peace as a private citizen.”

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has dismissed these allegations as baseless, reiterating its commitment to the rule of law.

However, the incident raises questions about surveillance practices and political intimidation in the current climate.

Gachagua’s revelations have sparked mixed reactions, with some sympathizing with his plight and others questioning the motives behind the claims.

The alleged misuse of a lorry’s registration on a trailing saloon car adds a mysterious twist, fueling speculation about the true nature of the surveillance.
