  • A 30-year-old man, Keith Nyakundi, tragically lost his life after a matatu crushed his head while he attempted to alight at a bus stop along Lang’ata Road
  • The accident occurred when Nyakundi misstepped and fell headfirst onto the road as the matatu was moving toward Rongai
  • Police have detained the vehicle for inspection, as investigations continue into the rising number of fatal road accidents in the country

A tragic accident on Friday night, August 30, claimed the life of a 30-year-old man who was crushed by a matatu while attempting to alight at the Carnivore bus stop along Lang’ata Road in Nairobi.

The deceased, identified as Keith Nyakundi, misstepped as the matatu, heading towards Rongai, slowed down.

In a split second, he fell headfirst onto the road, where the matatu tragically ran over him.

The incident occurred around 8 p.m., casting a shadow of grief over the usually busy area.

This latest fatality adds to the growing number of road accidents that continue to haunt Kenya’s roads.

Despite various efforts, including the launch of the National Road Safety Action Plan (2023-2027) by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) last October, road safety remains a pressing issue.

The plan aims to reduce fatalities and severe injuries by 50% in high-risk areas over the next few years.

With an average of 4,000 lives lost annually due to road accidents, calls for heightened safety measures continue to rise.

Principal Secretary in the State Department of Transport, Mohamed Daghar, stressed the need for coordinated efforts between national and county governments to curb this worrying trend.
