  • The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) issued a fiery statement demanding the resignation of Kithure Kindiki and Kipchumba Murkomen over their controversial remarks on abductions
  • The Commission accused the leaders of fueling public outrage with rhetoric dismissive of abductions, which have left countless families in despair
  • KHRC further called out Inspector-General Douglas Kanja for failing to curb the abductions, urging his immediate resignation and a full investigation into the matter

The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) has called for the resignation of seven top state officials, including Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen, over their controversial remarks amid the ongoing public outcry against enforced disappearances.

The other officials named include Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, and MPs Oscar Sudi, John Waluke, and William Kamket.

In a strongly worded statement, KHRC also demanded the resignation of Inspector-General of Police Douglas Kanja, accusing him of negligence for allowing such abductions under his watch.

The Commission insists on impartial investigations into the remarks made by these leaders and their alleged involvement in extrajudicial activities, urging that those found culpable be permanently barred from public office.

The controversy stems from escalating cases of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings of state critics, with the KHRC highlighting the leaders’ rhetoric as inflammatory and dismissive.

Kindiki, who previously justified police brutality during protests, has been singled out for creating a permissive environment for such actions.

Ichung’wah, in a heated exchange at a public funeral, accused Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya of orchestrating abductions during his tenure as Rift Valley Regional Commissioner.

Similarly, Sudi and Kingi stirred further outrage with statements endorsing harsh actions against content creators, with Sudi threatening swift personal action if he held the Interior CS position.

The KHRC maintains that these statements undermine the rule of law and the responsibilities of leadership, urging the public and international bodies to demand accountability for the abductions.
