Kenyans Mourn Life of Young Man Fatally Shot During ‘Occupy Parliament’ Protests

  • The incident occurred amidst nationwide protests against the Finance Bill, with demonstrators vowing further action and police cautioning against disrupting parliamentary proceedings.

After hours of what seemed like a peaceful protest as police refrained from using live bullets on protesters, a young man was finally shot during the late hours of the ‘Occupy Parliament’ protests.

Rex Kanyike Masai, 24, was fatally shot Thursday evening along Moi Avenue in Nairobi. Police are investigating the shooting, allegedly by a plainclothes officer around 7 pm.

Aerial footage captured the incident as protesters, pushed from Kenyatta Avenue and City Hall Way, regrouped outside a club on Moi Avenue.

According to witnesses, the plainclothes officer fired into the crowd, striking Rex in the leg. Despite immediate medical attention at Bliss Hospital Moi Avenue, Rex succumbed to his injuries.

Grief-stricken, his parents and fellow protesters gathered at the mortuary to mourn his untimely death.

The shooting took place amid widespread protests in urban centers across the country, with demonstrators pledging to continue their actions.

Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome emphasized the importance of safeguarding parliamentary proceedings while upholding citizens’ right to protest, highlighting the balance between maintaining order and respecting democratic freedoms.

The ‘Occupy Parliament’ movement has gained momentum following controversial amendments to the Finance Bill, particularly the removal of the proposed 16% VAT on essential items.

President William Ruto assured the public that the protests would not derail the legislative process, as the bill moves forward in Parliament with further debates and potential changes expected in the coming week.

In the wake of Rex’s death, protesters have intensified their calls for accountability and justice, condemning the use of excessive force by the police.

The incident has heightened tensions and galvanized public sentiment against the Finance Bill, with many citizens demanding significant changes to the proposed legislation.
