  • Reactions have poured in after Interior CS Kithure Kindiki welcomed President William Ruto to the 61st Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kwale
  • This has stirred reactions after further reports that Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s name was absent from the guests list
  • Gachagua is still hospitalized at Karen Hospital, recovering from an undisclosed condition after a court order temporarily halted his Senate impeachment

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki welcomed President William Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto to Kwale County on Sunday ahead of the 61st Mashujaa Day celebrations.

This gesture, captured in images showing Kindiki greeting the President as he alighted from a Kenya Airforce chopper, raised eyebrows among observers as Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s name was conspicuously missing from the guest list.

Flanked by Trade CS Salim Mvurya, Interior PS Raymond Olollo, and Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani, Kindiki’s prominent role in the event stirred political chatter.

Just days ago, Kindiki was nominated as Deputy President following Gachagua’s impeachment by the Senate on October 17, 2024, with five out of 11 grounds supporting his removal.

Meanwhile, Gachagua remains hospitalized at Karen Hospital, Nairobi, after being admitted on the day of his impeachment.

Initially expected to stay for 48 to 72 hours, his recovery continues amid political uncertainty.

Though a court order temporarily suspended the Senate’s decision, allowing Gachagua to retain his seat, Kindiki’s visible presence during such a significant national celebration signals a shifting political landscape.

Despite his absence, Gachagua took to X (formerly Twitter) to join Kenyans in celebrating Mashujaa Day, writing, “Happy Mashujaa Day dear Kenyans. God Bless our Nation.”
