  • Police in Dukana, Marsabit County, have arrested four family members after newborn twins were suffocated to death just two days after their birth in Dololo Boji village
  • Authorities suspect the killings were linked to a traditional belief in the Gabra community, which views firstborn twins as a bad omen
  • The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is set to exhume the bodies for a post-mortem as the mother undergoes psychological counseling

Police in Dukana, Marsabit County, have arrested four family members in connection with the tragic deaths of newborn twins.

The twins, a boy and a girl, were born healthy on Sunday but were suffocated just two days later, allegedly due to an ancient cultural belief.

The heartbreaking discovery was made on Monday night, barely a day after the twins’ mother was discharged from the hospital.

The area chief had been alerted by concerned locals, who suspected foul play after the father claimed the twins were fine. Further investigation uncovered the grim truth, and the deaths are now being treated as homicide.

Dukana Assistant County Commissioner Nazarin Njuki confirmed that the four family members are the main suspects in the case, linked to a belief in the Gabra community that views firstborn twins as an ill omen.

Authorities have requested a court order to exhume the bodies for further examination and post-mortem analysis to determine the exact cause of death.

The mother, who has been denied involvement, is currently receiving psychological support at the hospital, while police guard the burial site.

Njuki condemned the harmful traditional practice, urging the community to abandon such beliefs and respect human life above outdated customs.
