Tension has gripped Meru for most of the day as anti-Kawira Mwangaza protesters clashed with police.
The confrontation escalated when tear gas, intended for the protesters, landed inside Meru Primary School, causing five students to collapse.

A video of the chaotic scene circulating on Telegram shows students desperately running across the school compound, carrying those who had fainted.
An ambulance arrived on the scene, with the students seen being rushed onto stretchers as uncertainty loomed in the county.

The protests have brought activities in Meru Town to a standstill, as demonstrators opposed to Kawira Mwangaza’s continued stay in office engaged in running battles with the police.
Other videos captured protesters wielding large sticks and placards, sprinting down a highway as officers pursued them.
This unrest follows a recent High Court ruling that barred the Senate from officially removing Governor Kawira Mwangaza from office, despite a majority vote in favor of her impeachment.
