  • The Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, along with its Semi-Autonomous Government Agencies (SAGAs), aims to plant 30 million tree seedlings in the next decade
  • This is in line with President Ruto’s directive of planting 15 billion trees by 2032
  • This target has been allocated to both the State Departments for Energy and Petroleum, as well as the 11 SAGAs affiliated with the ministry

In alignment with President Ruto’s ambitious directive of planting 15 billion trees by 2032, the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum and its Semi-Autonomous Government Agencies (SAGAs) have set their sights on planting 30 million tree seedlings over the next decade.

Addressing the press at Kibunja area in Molo Sub-County, Mr. Mohamed Liban, the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Petroleum, emphasized the importance of this initiative.

He revealed that the target of 30 million tree seedlings has been allocated to the State Departments for Energy and Petroleum, along with the 11 SAGAs under the ministry’s umbrella.

Yesterday, officials from the State Department and participating SAGAs took concrete steps towards this goal by planting 22,000 seedlings in Kibunja and Jogoo Forest sites in Koibatek Forest, Baringo County, adjacent to Molo sub-county.

The latter plans to plant approximately 27,500 seedlings every second Friday of the month until October, capitalizing on the ongoing rains.

PS Liban emphasized the government’s collaborative approach with communities to achieve President Ruto’s directive, aimed at increasing the country’s forest cover from 10 to 12 percent.

Community members, granted the opportunity to practice the ‘shamba’ system in the replanted areas, were urged to ensure a 99 percent success rate in nurturing the trees.

Mr. John Busiega, Chair of the Community Forest Association (CFA), echoed this sentiment, calling for assistance from the Forest Department to uproot the invasive blue gum tree species.

He pledged the CFA’s commitment to safeguarding the newly planted seedlings, recognizing the myriad benefits forests bring to communities.
