  • When Asli Tuna joins the globe’s largest TV network as an intern, she concocts schemes to dethrone Lale Kiran, the network’s lead presenter and her lifelong role model
  • In a riveting saga filled with suspense, the drama unfolds as the ingenue sets traps and weaves deceit to oust the leading anchor and seize her coveted position
  • However, while everything unfolds according to the Asli’s plan, fans get divided between liking her, in a meticulously written story about envy and ambition

Turkish Dramas have carved a niche for themselves on streaming platforms, offering a blend of high-stakes narratives, emotional intensity, and cultural intrigue.

“As the Crow Flies,” a recent addition to the Netflix library, takes viewers on a captivating, albeit uneven, journey into the ruthless world of journalism.

Storyline

The series centers on Lale, a seasoned news anchor at the pinnacle of her career.

Her world is meticulously constructed; she commands respect, wields influence, and basks in the glow of public adoration.

However, this carefully curated life is disrupted by the arrival of Asli, a young, ambitious reporter who idolizes Lale.

Asli’s initial admiration quickly morphs into a toxic mix of envy and obsession, setting the stage for a gripping tale of ambition gone awry.

Inspiration

The narrative draws inspiration from classic thrillers like “Single White Female” and “The Devil Wears Prada.”

Asli’s relentless pursuit of Lale’s position echoes the stalkerish tendencies of these earlier narratives, while the cutthroat environment of the newsroom adds a layer of professional tension.

The series excels in its fast-paced delivery.

Sharp dialogue, shocking revelations, and cliffhangers keep viewers engaged, eager to unravel the tangled web of secrets and desires.

Flaws

Despite its captivating premise, “As the Crow Flies” is not without its flaws.

The plot occasionally veers into melodramatic territory, relying on tropes and predictable twists to heighten the emotional stakes.

Additionally, certain character motivations, particularly Asli’s descent into obsession, can feel underdeveloped, leaving viewers with a sense of narrative dissonance.

Actors Deliver Top Level Acting Skills

However, the series is salvaged by a powerhouse performance from Birce Akalay  as Lale.

Akalay portrays the aging anchor with remarkable nuance.

Lale is a complex character, a woman grappling with the pressures of maintaining her status while confronting the inevitable march of time.

Akalay masterfully balances Lale’s strength and vulnerability, creating a character that is both admirable and relatable.

The supporting cast is equally impressive, especially Miray Daner, whose portrayal of Asli sends shivers down the spine as her character’s sanity crumbles.

Ultimately, “As the Crow Flies” is a show with a split personality.

It soars with its fast-paced plot, compelling performances, and exploration of ambition’s dark side.

Yet, it occasionally clips its wings with predictable plot points and overly dramatic moments.

Despite these shortcomings, the series remains a worthy watch for those seeking a suspenseful drama with a generous helping of Turkish flair.

Just be prepared for the narrative to take a few unexpected turns, some smoother than others.
