Murang’a County was shaken on Thursday morning after a routine police operation took a dangerous turn.

A police officer from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Mathioya unit found himself battling for his life after his mobile phone exploded unexpectedly in his pocket.

Police Constable Simon Chepkirwok was part of a four-officer team traveling to Kinangop, Nyandarua County, on official duty.

At around 9:53 a.m., as their vehicle sped along the quiet roads of Murang’a, a sudden explosion jolted the officers.

In a matter of seconds, Chepkirwok’s mobile phone ignited in his left front trouser pocket, the flames engulfing his leg and sending the team into a frantic rush to save their colleague.

The officer’s comrades acted quickly, pulling over and desperately working to extinguish the flames before speeding him to Kenol Hospital.

Chepkirwok suffered severe burns on his left thigh, and his colleagues were left grappling with the shock of the unexpected incident.

The make and model of the phone, identified as a Techno BF1, has been seized for forensic examination, as investigators seek answers to how an everyday device turned into a life-threatening hazard.

While this marks a rare occurrence, it raises alarm about the potential dangers of faulty electronics. The terrifying incident has left the force and the public questioning how something so common could go so wrong.

Authorities are now urging mobile phone users to be vigilant, emphasizing the importance of purchasing certified products from reputable sources.

Counterfeit or poorly manufactured devices, often seen in the market, have been known to pose significant risks, including overheating and spontaneous combustion.
