A rogue police officer, identified by online sleuths as the shooter responsible for the tragic death of 27-year-old Rex Kanyike, is under scrutiny again for opening fire on journalists during yesterday’s protests.

The country is in an uproar after a video surfaced showing the officer in a blue shirt and cap recklessly discharging his firearm at a group of reporters.

Kenyans have expressed their anger, demanding his immediate arrest, convinced he is the same officer who shot Kanyike during last week’s protests.

In the video, the officer is seen hurrying to enter the front seat of a police Toyota Hilux truck, then looking back and opening fire without checking his target, causing people to scatter in panic.

Background voices can be heard wailing, though the video does not show where the bullets landed, and it is unclear if anyone was injured or killed as a result.

This incident adds to the growing condemnation of police brutality, following the deaths of over 25 people during the June 25 protests in Nairobi and other parts of the country.

Reports have also emerged of extrajudicial killings by police in Githurai and Rongai, with several deaths reported in the chaos of the last two nights.

Photos and videos have surfaced, providing evidence of police shootings, including a young man with six bullet wounds in Nairobi CBD and a child from Rongai with multiple bullet wounds on his back and stomach.

An AFP journalist was among the numerous civilians shot on Tuesday, leading to widespread condemnation of the state’s use of live bullets against its citizens protesting the “draconian” finance bill.
