  • President William Ruto faced a heated online forum on X, where he apologized for police brutality during recent protests
  • Ruto was confronted by many furious Kenyans including protest leader Kevin Monari, vowing to them that he would address the abductions by security forces
  • Despite technical glitches, the discussion was intense, with Ruto defending his stance on police actions and promising justice

President William Ruto faced a barrage of criticism during an online forum on the social media platform X, apologizing for police brutality against anti-tax protesters.

The forum, hosted on X Spaces and dubbed #EngageThePresident, saw 125,000 participants, with protest leader Kevin Monari confronting Ruto about his abduction by security forces.

Ruto, who accused some of inflating the death toll during the protests, pledged to withdraw the controversial finance bill and address issues raised by the youth, despite technical difficulties delaying the session’s start.

During the three-hour session, which began over an hour late, Ruto’s empathy was questioned as participants called him a liar and demanded accountability for the 40+ deaths reported by a state-funded human rights commission.

Ruto refuted this number, stating that 25 people had died. The protests have since evolved into calls for Ruto’s resignation and justice for those killed by security forces.

Ruto denied direct involvement in police actions, emphasizing Kenya’s democratic structure and promising to follow up on the abduction issues raised.

The session, promoted by Ruto’s daughter Charlene as a “chance of a lifetime” for young people, also had several cabinet members present, though silent.

Before the X Spaces event, Ruto delivered a national address promising spending cuts due to the scrapped tax rises, framing this “difficult time” as a pivotal moment for addressing critical national issues beyond tribal or political lines.
