  • Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has claimed that a former NIS officer he hired was shot by hired assassins
  • Gachagua, who alleged that state entities like the NIS and DCI are being used to intimidate him said the bullet narrowly missed his officer’s head and hit his shoulder instead
  • The Deputy President also claims his phone conversations are being intercepted and recorded, intensifying the ongoing tensions

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has made explosive claims that an ex-National Intelligence Service (NIS) officer, whom he had recruited to aid in the fight against illicit brew, was targeted and shot by hired assassins.

In an interview with Kikuyu vernacular stations, Gachagua detailed the incident, stating that the officer, who had been dismissed from the NIS, was attacked as he left his home in Kileleshwa.

According to Gachagua, the assailants, riding a motorbike, shot at the officer with a bullet that narrowly missed his head and struck his shoulder instead.

The officer was subsequently treated at Nairobi Hospital for a week, where the bullet was removed. Gachagua expressed concern that the attacker remains at large and criticized the lack of progress in apprehending the perpetrator.

The Deputy President accused various state entities, particularly the NIS and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), of being used to intimidate and undermine him.

He alleged that his phone calls and those of his close associates are being intercepted and recorded, suggesting a covert effort to undermine his position.

Gachagua has previously accused NIS Director Noordin Hajji of failing to provide accurate information to President William Ruto, particularly regarding the recent nationwide protests against the Finance Bill 2024.

He has called for Hajji’s resignation, alleging that the NIS is poorly managed and that key officials have been dismissed, leaving the agency weakened.
