  • President William Ruto has announced the lifting of the 12-floor cap on Eastleigh storey buildings, increasing it to 30 floors
  • The President emphasized that this move aims to enhance accommodation for citizens, particularly those residing in slum areas
  • However, a section of netizens have expressed discontent, saying lifting the cap will come at a cost for the Moi Air Base which is adjacent to the fast-growing neighborhood

President William Ruto has announced the lifting of the 12-floor cap on Eastleigh storey buildings, increasing it to 30 floors.

Speaking during an impromptu visit in Mathare, the President emphasized that this move aims to enhance accommodation for citizens, particularly those residing in slum areas.

Ruto highlighted the importance of providing improved accommodation to promote harmonious living conditions, stating, “Since I am the Commander in Chief, I have said that in Eastleigh, you couldn’t build a house beyond 12 floors but now we can build storey buildings of up to 30 floors so that citizens can get accommodation and live in a harmonious neighborhood.”

Furthermore, the President revealed plans to advertise the construction of 20,000 affordable houses in slum neighborhoods such as Mathare, Kiamaiko, and Kibra.

Under this initiative, residents will have the opportunity to own houses through a rent-to-buy agreement, with monthly payments as low as Ksh3,000.

Ruto’s directive aligns with Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja’s proposal to review the floor limit for residential buildings within Nairobi County to 75 floors.

Sakaja had previously emphasized the need for such a review due to limited space within the city, reassuring citizens that development policies and zoning frameworks would ensure the integration of essential infrastructure.

However, amidst the announcement, netizens have raised concerns regarding the potential impact on public infrastructure, particularly the Moi Air Base adjacent to the fast-rising suburban area.

Some speculate that the 12-floor cap was initially set to maintain clear airspace around the military base, and lifting it could pose challenges in the future.
