  • After facing threats of a boycott from Kenyan youth over allegations of leaking protesters information to the DCI, Safaricom has launched new ‘Gen Z Offers’ data bundles
  • Despite CEO Peter Ndegwa’s denial of these allegations, social media criticism persisted, with troves of Gen Zs vowing to switch to Airtel Kenya
  • The package which includes special plans for TikTok has however been met with skepticism, with majority saying the offers existed before and have just been rebranded to woo the irked demographic

In response to threats from Kenyan youth to boycott Safaricom over allegations that the company was leaking customer information to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Safaricom has launched a new data bundle package called ‘Gen Z Offers.’

This package includes a special plan exclusively for TikTok, where a significant portion of this demographic is active.

The Gen Z Offers include 1.5 GB of data for Ksh 20, 1 GB of TikTok data for Ksh 10, 1.2 GB for Ksh 20 with an additional free game, and 1.5 GB of data for Ksh 50, which lasts for 3 hours and comes with a free game.

These offers can be accessed by pressing option 0, the topmost option in the ‘Buy Bundles’ menu, highlighting the impact of Gen Z’s influence in Kenya.

Despite Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa issuing a statement denying that the company was sharing customer information with the DCI without consent, social media criticism persisted.

Notably, socialite Kate Actress, who had been an ambassador for the brand, terminated her contract, declaring she would not work with any brand that does not support the needs of Kenyans.

Kenyan social media users continue to rally for a switch to Airtel Kenya, the second-largest telecom company after Safaricom, as a form of protest.

This controversy follows President Ruto’s introduction of the Finance Bill 2024, which has been widely criticized as draconian and likely to make life unbearable by introducing new and egregious taxes.

Nearly three-quarters of the nation opposed the bill, but leaders allied with President Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza government vowed to support it, along with brands benefiting from government contracts.

This led to widespread protests and boycotts, with some protesters nearly burning down the parliament.

Kenyans React to Safaricom’s Gen Z Offers

Kenyans have reacted to Safaricom’s new Gen Z Offers with skepticism, claiming the company is simply rebranding existing offers.

Some have called for a boycott, citing the company’s lack of insurance for its M-Pesa money transfer service, which limits its ability to refund users without reversal requests.

Others acknowledged that the move highlighted the significant influence of Gen Z in Kenya.
