  • A second suspect in the chilling Shakahola massacre, Edison Safari Munyambo, has died in custody while undergoing treatment for a brief illness
  • His death comes amidst ongoing legal proceedings against 95 accused persons, including Pastor Paul Mackenzie
  • Mackenzie faces charges of murder, manslaughter, and organized crime related to the doomsday cult that led to over 420 deaths

A second suspect in the shocking Shakahola massacre case has died while in custody, according to a statement released by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) on Monday.

The suspect, identified as Edison Safari Munyambo, also known by the alias Baba Sifa, passed away at a Mombasa hospital where he was undergoing treatment following a brief illness.

His death follows that of another accused, Mary Charo Mbita, who succumbed at the Coast Teaching and Referral Hospital earlier.

Munyambo was among 95 individuals facing charges linked to the Shakahola massacre, a case that has gripped the nation due to its chilling details.

The accused were charged with a staggering 283 counts of manslaughter before Mombasa Chief Magistrate Alex Ithuku.

Among the suspects is the main accused, Pastor Paul Mackenzie, whose doomsday cult has been at the center of investigations.

Additionally, they face accusations of engaging in organized criminal activity, radicalization, and facilitating the commission of a terrorist act, violations under both the Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2012, and the Prevention of Organized Crimes Act, 2010.

With over 420 bodies exhumed from Mackenzie’s cult as of November 2023, the scale of the tragedy continues to unfold.

Followers of Mackenzie’s extremist teachings were allegedly urged to starve themselves to death to ‘meet Jesus,’ leading to a nationwide outcry and intensive legal scrutiny.

Despite Munyambo’s death, the ODPP indicated that the court proceedings would continue as scheduled. Magistrate Ithuku affirmed that the case would proceed, pending the official death certificate.

Once the documentation is provided, the charges against Munyambo will be marked as abated.
