Several Feared Trapped as Under-Construction Building Collapses During Christmas in Rongo

The stillness of Christmas evening in Rongo town, Migori County, was violently disrupted when a storey building under construction crumbled into a heap of dust and twisted metal.

What should have been a day of celebration has turned into a harrowing race against time as rescue teams battle to save lives buried beneath the rubble.

The collapse, which occurred just after dusk, has left the community in shock.

Witnesses describe a deafening roar as the building gave way, sending construction materials and debris flying into the air.

Their survival, though a small relief, is overshadowed by fears that others may still be trapped beneath the wreckage.

A Race Against Time

The site has transformed into a chaotic scene as rescue workers, joined by locals, dig frantically through the rubble.

Flashlights beam through the night, illuminating the faces of anxious onlookers and the determined rescue teams.

“We are doing everything we can,” said Rongo Member of Parliament Paul Abuor, who rushed to the scene shortly after the incident.

“We’ve mobilized additional equipment, but the exact number of those trapped remains unknown.”

Abuor’s words carry a weight of urgency. Every passing second feels like an eternity for families who fear their loved ones may be buried alive.

The cries for help from the crowd grow louder, echoing into the night as the rescue effort intensifies.
