Stephen Kigundu: Uganda’s Air Force Commander Found Dead in Bathroom

Brigadier General Stephen Kigundu, the Deputy Commander of the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) Air Force unit has tragically passed away.

The news if his untimely passing were announced by Defence Spokesman Brigadier General Felix Kulayigye on March 31.

According to Brig. Gen. Kulayigye’s statement, Brig. Gen. Kigundu was found deceased in the bathroom of his official residence in Entebbe.

“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces inform the public of the untimely demise of Brigadier General Stephen Kigundu, the Deputy Commander of UPDF Air Force which occurred in the evening of today 31 March 2024 at his official residence in Entebbe,”

Brig. Gen. Kulayigye further elaborated that Brig. Gen. Kigundu had been in good health throughout the day until his sudden passing in the evening.

The loss of Brig. Gen. Kigundu, a key figure within the UPDF Air Force, leaves a significant void during a crucial time when his expertise was pivotal in enhancing the capabilities of the Air Force.

Brig. Kulayigye added, reflecting the somber mood within the UPDF community.

Brigadier General Kigundu had recently participated in the handover ceremony where General Muhoozi Kainerugaba assumed the role of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) from Gen. Wilson Mbasu Mbadi, who now serves as the junior trade minister.

The ceremony, presided over by Gen. Salim Saleh and held at the 4th Division UPDF Headquarters in Gulu, was attended by various defense chiefs.

During the event, Reserve Force Commander Lieutenant General Otema Awany highlighted the significance of the 4th Division within the UPDF, emphasizing its role in providing invaluable military experience to senior UPDF officers.
