  • The Kiswahili paper at Makande Girls Secondary School was abruptly halted on Thursday after a gas leak caused panic and led to eight students fainting
  • Five of the students were rushed to Makadara General Hospital for treatment, but are reportedly in stable condition, while the remaining candidates were moved to a nearby school to finish their exams
  • Investigations are underway, with authorities suspecting nearby businesses may be responsible for the hazardous gas leak.

A gas leak at Makande Girls Secondary School in Mombasa on Thursday morning led to chaos during the ongoing Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams, with eight students fainting and several rushed to the hospital.

The incident, which occurred as the candidates were sitting for their Kiswahili exam, forced authorities to temporarily halt the exam as the gas leak spread throughout the examination hall.

Five of the affected students are still receiving treatment at Makadara General Hospital, though their condition has been described as stable.
