Burglars entered the morgue of the War Memorial Hospital and took away a preserved body due to an outstanding medical bill of Ksh 921,000.

The CEO of Nakuru War Memorial, Patricia Musale, verified the robbery occurrence on Friday, February 23. This confirmation followed the discovery that the body was absent from the cold room.

Madalene Mwikali, aged 73, had remained in the mortuary since September 28, 2023.

The family attempted to retrieve the remains initially, but law enforcement officials, who had secured the hospital, thwarted their efforts.

Confronted by this challenge, they had no choice but to patiently await the resolution of the hospital’s disagreements with the county government, as ownership transitioned between parties.

Unaware at the time, they would later discover that they were facing a combined invoice covering the entire period during which the body was stored and the hospital remained closed.

Mwikali’s family had been going through prolonged suffering as they were unable to lay their relative to rest.

This occurred after her passing away at the identical hospital, following an illness that led to her admission.

The family sought legal intervention to retrieve the deceased’s body, but the hospital continued to hinder them by referencing an outstanding payment.

Afterward, the family sought legal intervention to retrieve the deceased’s body, but the hospital continued to hinder them by referencing an outstanding payment.

The court granted permission for the retrieval of the body, but county enforcement officers were positioned at the premises, and not even a court-issued directive could provide them entry.

Currently, the hospital continues to be non-operational, despite a directive from the Nakuru Environment and Land Court instructing the county government to permit the resumption of operations until a final ruling is made.

After the court order was ignored, the case was transferred to a Nairobi court that falls under the same legal authority.
